There are two reasons I fell in love with the #fretless #bass many years ago. (I never became a bass player though.) The first was A Remark You Made by Weather Report with Jaco Pastorius on bass.
The second reason was Rikki's Shuffle by Michael Hedges with Michael Manring on bass:
@bluebirch I would like to try fretless acoustic guitar.
@owl Par Metheny plays fretless guitar on Imaginary Day.
@bluebirch While this is an entirely different genre I'm blown away by players like Forest. He's on the forefront of fretless in modern metal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OP0GIa9uJjE
@raichoo Oh. My. God. I'll stick to my piano.
@bluebirch Can't blame you, stuff is intense
@raichoo I've been researching this Dominic Forest and found Beyond Creation. I'm not overly into growl singing and thrashing, but some of the instrumental parts are astounding!
@raichoo And the fretless bass in the mix!
@bluebirch Hearing players like that always makes we want to get a fretless myself. But there is only a finite amount of time one can invest in an instrument
@raichoo What are you waiting for? Do it!
@bluebirch Nah, I've just ordered a custom bass already. That one is really breaking the bank already
@bluebirch Absolutely. I know that harsh vocals are not everybody's cup of tea. Surprisingly fretless has a tradition in Death Metal, and it has a lot of great players. It's what you make with the instrument, not what people necessarily associate with it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Z7EvlVoVFE
@raichoo Alex Weber uses Alain Caron's thumb technique.
@bluebirch yep, that was probably the one for me too... Jaco... beautiful
Percy Jones in Brand X also for me back then...
@bluebirch Percy being unique, even amongst fretless players, all over this rather beautiful Brand X tune
