Musician Pope Gregory I (stage name "Saint Gregory the Great") lived for 64 years. This number being a power of 2, he was canonized immediately after his death, and the #GregorianChant hashtag was born.
Gregory is believed to have composed such timeless hits as the Sacramentary and, today's pick for #GenreOfTheWeek, the Antiphonary:
Back around the 600's, the #VST standard hadn't been finalized yet, so producers were forced to build gigantic structures to achieve the iconic Gregorian 'verb. These buildings doubled as places of worship, a practice that continues to this day.
Frustrated at the over-produced state of young people's pop music, Gregory took a different path, one of brutal simplicity. He dispensed with rhythm and harmony entirely, a decision that arguably cost him many a follower, but one that would ultimately prove groundbreaking.
